The Squirrel Drey meets every Tuesday evening at the Scout Headquarters from 5:00pm to 6:00pm unless otherwise stated on the programme.
The choice of name was also influenced by the site of Robert Baden-Powell’s first camp in 1907 Brownsea Island camp having a thriving colony of red squirrels.

The Squirrel Drey is for boys and girls from 4 – 6 years old. The "Squirrel" section of Scouting was officially launched by The Scout Association in the UK in 2020, though it had been trialled for a couple of years. We only launched our Squirrel Drey in November 2025 so is still in his infancy and a valued addition to our scouting family at the 82nd Bristol Scout Group.
Adventurous activities
The Squirrels are encouraged to take part in a fun filled programme. This consists of following a scheduled programme laid down by The Scout Association. Their activities contribute to the badges available for Squirrel scouts. The Squirrels work towards their badges in hope to achieve the Chief Scout Acorn Award. These badges can be worked on Squirrel nights or at home in the children’s spare time.
Working together
The 82nd Squirrel group is made up of a selection of children from different schools in the local and wider area. This helps the younger children to develop new friendships outside of the school environment.
Nights away
Squirrels will hopefully have the opportunity to take part in the fun and excitement of sleepovers. This is often the first time that the young people have spent a night away from home so hopefully it will be a real adventure for them.
Even if they do not want to experience the nights away opportunities, they can still attend most activities as day visitors, so they don’t miss out.
